HOME SCHOOL INSTRUCTION When the requirements of Section 22.1-254.1 to the Code of Virginia (1950) as amended have been satisfied, instruction of children by their parent in their home is an acceptable alternative form of education in lieu of students attending public school. A parent must be recognized as eligible to provide home instruction by meeting specified requirements as defined by the Code of Virginia. The Department of Student Services and Special Education oversees the authorization of home instruction for families in Bristol, Virginia. The following two forms and their required documentation must be submitted to Ms. Joy Berry in the Department of Student Services and Special Education before authorization to provide home instruction will be considered: Approval for home school instruction must be secured on an annual basis. By August 1 each year, parents must provide evidence of educational achievement as prescribed in Section 22.1-254.1 to the Code of Virginia (1950). A home school instruction packet may be obtained by contacting the Department of Student Services and Special Education. The packet contains the required forms for requesting authorization to provide home school instruction, a current listing of correspondence courses approved by the Virginia Department of Education for home instruction, a copy of Bristol Virginia Public Schools Policy LED – Home Instruction, and a copy of Section 22.1-254.1 to the Code of Virginia (1950) which defines the requirements for home instruction.
