| Character
Counts! is a program employed by Bristol
Virginia Public Schools that strengthens our
students' lives through character education.
Character Counts! is a framework that help
students develop the Six Pillars of
Character: trustworthiness, respect,
responsibility, fairness, caring and
citizenship. |

The Bristol
Virginia Sheriff Department collaboratively
partners with Bristol Virginia Public
Schools to provide Drug Abuse Resistance
Education – the D.A.R.E. Program. There
are several components to the D.A.R.E.
curriculum including the “core curriculum”
for fifth grade; visitation for kindergarten
– fourth grade; a middle school program; and
a senior high curriculum. The D.A.R.E.
Program focuses on improving skills that
help students resist risk-taking behaviors
and peer influences that might lead to drug
use and/or violence. |

| The Second
Step program teaches social and emotional
skills for violence prevention. The
program includes research-based, teacher
friendly curricula, training for educators,
and parent-education components, and focuses
on the following skills: empathy,
impulse control, anger management, and
problem solving. |
