Emergency Information

Fire Drills

Monthly fire drills are required by Virginia State Law and will be conducted in connection with the local fire department.  An evacuation plan is posted in case of a real emergency.  When the alarm sounds:

Take attendance sheets
Close classroom windows
Close classroom doors
Lead class to assigned exit door
Walk to the designated area outside school building
Take attendance to make sure all children are accounted for
Special area teachers will check the bathrooms to make sure all children have left the school building
Talking is NOT PERMITTED at anytime during a fire drill
Children must walk in an orderly fashion and listen carefully for additional instructions.

Plan of Evacuation in Emergency Situations

The student body, faculty, custodians, and cafeteria personnel will be notified by way of intercom or the fire alarm's continuous ring in case of an emergency.  During an evacuation the following procedures will be implemented:

The student body, faculty, custodians, and cafeteria personnel will move to the East End Christian Church.

Teachers are expected to keep their students in line and to lease them in a rapid but orderly fashion to the church.  Teachers should carry their attendance sheet and check their roll immediately upon arrival to the church.

If possible, the office manager, principal, or designee will call the police, fire department, School Board Office, etc.  If time does not allow a call from the school - the calls will be made from the church.  Radio and television stations will be called to assure parents of the safety of their children.  School buses will be called to pick the students up and return to their homes.

Teachers are not to leave their students until each student has been picked up by parents, put on a bus, or sent home walking.  Caution students who have not already spoken with their parents to stay at  home until they do so.

Emergencies For Evacuation Include:

Fire in the building
Serious boiler problems
Tornado
Violent storms
High winds

Universal Precautions

Students and teachers should never touch or attempt to clean up vomit or body fluids.  This should be left to the janitorial staff.

If a student is bleeding to the extent that intervention is necessary, the student should apply direct pressure to his/her own wound.  This is in the event that latex gloves are not readily available.

It is recommended that a "kit" be provided and easily accessible in classrooms, hallways, athletic facilities, etc. for use by students and teachers alike. The kit should contain disinfectant, disposable gloves, paper towels, and plastic bags.

Everyone (staff and children) should be treated as if they were HIV infected.  If is very likely that there is or will be someone who is HIV infected in your school.  It is also likely that you will not know who that person is or even if there is such a person on campus.  If everyone is treated in the same manner, even if no one is presently infected, it will protect the individual who may become infected.  If universal precautions are begun now, they will become the standard operating procedure.

The use of universal precautions will help to eliminate the spread of other communicable diseases, not just AIDS.
