| Students
new to the Bristol, Virginia School system in grades Pre-K through Third
grade receive a complete Speech and Hearing screening within 60 days of
enrollment.
If screening
results suggest that the students need to be referred fan an
evaluation for Special Education and related services, then the
classroom teacher refers the student to the Child Study
Committee in their school.
Eligibility
for Speech Services is based on being able to answer yes to the
following questions:
- Does the
child have a disability?
- Does the
speech disability have an adverse educational impact?
- Does the
child require specialized instruction?
The
Eligibility committee must find the child eligible, or not
eligible, for special education services as a "child with a
disability." In determining eligibility, the committee
must be sure that the student's difficulties are not due to lack
of instruction or limited English proficiency.
Speech
services can be a primary special education service or a related
service.
Once a child
is found eligible, an Individualized Education Program (IEP)
must be developed. |
