European Explorers (SOL USI.4 a,b)

Differentiation Project assigned on September 22, 2006

1)  TLW  choose a European explorer and research his biography.  Students should consider the following questions as they conduct their research:

  • When was this man born?
  • When did this man die?  How did he die?
  • Where was he born?
  • What kind of family life did he have?
  • Did he have brothers and sisters?
  • What encouraged this man to pursue a life of exploration?
  • What personal characteristics made him well suited to be an explorer?
  • Where did he explore?
  • During which years did he explore?
  • What were the names of his ship or ships, if available?
  • What did this man accomplish during his lifetime?
  • Was this man seen as a hero during his lifetime?

Students should use library and Internet resources to complete their research.  The following Web sites can provide information on European explorers:

        Explorers. Education Technology-KSU.

        The Marinersí Museum

        Explorers at Yahoo.

Kid Info; Reference Resources:  European Explorers

Search Engines

2)  TLW  create a flipbook using the researched information, colored paper, markers, colored pencils, and glue.  Students will compile their information in the form of a story that relates the life and accomplishments of their explorer.  Students should write their story using their own words, either free hand or on the computer, and cut and paste the text into their book.  Students may illustrate their explorerís story by drawing pictures or finding pictures from the Internet.  BE CREATIVE and USE LOTS OF COLOR.

TLW  share and discuss their flipbooks with the class in an oral presentation.

4)  Assessment will be based on:  a)  quality of explorer's life story
                                                 b)  oral presentation
                                                 c)  decoration of flipbook (to include pictures of explorer)
