| My
Professional Life
I am currently an
Instructional Technology Resource Teacher for the Bristol VA Public
Schools. Prior to this year (2005-2006), I taught children with various
disabilities in grades 1-5.
I assist teachers with ways and ideas to integrate technology into the
curriculum as well as offering software support. I have been fortunate enough to have the
opportunity to lead several in-services for teachers, including
Inspiration, Introduction to Windows, Smart Board, and Accelerated Reader. I
teach Adult Education Computer classes at Virginia High School as
well.
I have completed the
coursework for Instructional Technology and
Educational Networking after at the University of
VA. I have been trained in CISCO and A+ Hardware and Software.
I serve as the Technology Chairperson for the Southwest
VA Reading Council. I am the Webmaster and Technology and Reading Chair
for the Virginia State Reading Association. I have presented at various
conferences and in-services over the past few years, including SACS,
NCETC, and VSRA.
I serve on
the Virginia Educational Technology Advisory Committee (VETAC) as a liaison
for the VSRA.

| The Internet and
Me
For the past 10 years
I have worked with the Internet. It didn't take long for me to
figure out that this was one of the most prevalent teaching tools that I
would ever encounter. I have come to depend on it as an integral
part of my teaching.
I have used the Internet in my
own Resource Classroom as well as in the lab classes that I taught.
My students with learning disabilities became proficient at finding
needed information and finding answers to questions. We used the
Internet for researching specific information such as writing a report on
a certain Children's Author. I also found it very useful for
drilling math facts. Many sites are available that give immediate
feedback and the children can work on their own. In my classroom,
there were
several age groups and varying grade levels so this was important. I
was able to work one on one with children while others were working at the
computers. They used sites on the World Wide Web to reinforce skills they
were learning, to locate information on assigned topics, and to save
pictures that could be used in other projects. These are things I
will share with other teachers to use in their classrooms.
We also became
involved in email projects and have received letters from around the world.
This has been very exciting. For one
project, we
had a large map displayed with pushpins marking all the cities and
countries that had sent us email. Another email project was having pen
pals. I did this a little differently than just signing up for a service.
I contacted friends and former college roommates and matched up my
students with their children. These pen pals came from numerous
states and countries, different families, and various educational
experiences. Some of the pen pals were in private schools.
Others were home-schooled. The children had a wonderful time with
this project.
In the computer lab, I worked with classes on a number of projects which utilized the internet.
We did a biography project,
web quests,
Hyperstudio and PowerPoint presentations,
used sites such as Fun Brain, Big Chalk, and Brain
Pop, and created students' own
websites. I plan to continue to develop similar projects this year
to share with teachers. I have built this website to
assist teachers in finding ways to integrate technology into their daily
lives and also to align with the VA Standards of Learning.
I am presenting
workshops at conferences around the state, which will help teachers use
technology to enhance instruction. I have included several regular
classroom teachers in these presentations to share what we are doing in
their classrooms as well.
I am also excited to
see how the skills the students are obtaining are catching on at home.
Parents are telling me how excited the children are about what they are
learning and how the children are teaching them. Many adults feel
that they are "computer illiterate" and it is a challenge for me
to instill in the children the excitement to go out and teach others.
I have spent a lot of
time designing my websites (www.bvps.org/mwarren,
www.vsra.org, www.jewelrybybelieve.com,
www.bvps.org/vms,
www.bvps.org/culinaryarts, and
www.swreadingcouncil.org).
I have attempted to make these sites useful tools for educators and also
something that parents and students can utilize. I have begun a
newsgroup for the members of the Southwest VA Reading Council and am
hoping to see it really take off. I am also enjoying working on the
Governing Council of the VSRA and being the
Webmaster for
this organization.
I am excited about how
the Internet has become an integral part of my life. I plan to
continue to grow and share my knowledge with others.
