Book Report Alternatives

Are you having trouble getting your students to do book reports?  Now's the time to think "outside the box".  Try some new ideas.  Get your children so excited about books that they can't wait to tell others.

Prepare an oral report that lasts at least 5 minutes.  Make sure you include plot and characters. Answer any questions classmates have at the end of the presentation.
Pretend other students are clerks in a bookstore.  "Sell" them your book by giving a good sales pitch.
Conduct an interview of your favorite character in the book.  Prepare at least 10 questions that the character can be asked.  Choose a fellow classmate to portray the "Interviewer" and you portray the character, answering the questions.
Write a journal/diary that one of the main characters could have kept. Be sure and include not only events but also the characters thoughts and feelings.
Prepare a travel brochure of where your story takes place.  Make your readers want to visit this place.  Use Print Shop or a similar graphics program. Include pictures and details.
Dress up as one of the book characters and tell the story as if you are the character.
Write a newspaper book review of your book.
Read the same book as a classmate.  Work together to create a video.  This can be of an interview of the author or an interview of a character.  (think "Oprah style")
Create a poster of the book using a graphics program (Publisher, Print Shop, etc.)
Write a letter to a main character in the book.  Ask questions of give advice on the situations in the story
