Ways to Make Others Want to Come Back to Visit Your Website!

Today's society is visual and fast paced.  Content remains most important when creating your webpage, but having attractive visual effects is also important.  It makes people want to come back to visit you on the web.  If you are creating pages for your students, they will be more interested in staying and revisiting if you have some "attention getters".  Here are a few things to help you get started:
  1. Graphics If you are using large graphics use a thumbnail image of the picture.   This will allow your page to download more quickly.  Not everyone has high-speed internet.
Use the same graphics as often as possible. An image that is used repetitively, only had to be downloaded once. Using a large number of different images will slow the download time of your webpage. Visitors may decide not to visit your webpage if it takes a long time to download.

  2. Add background color or a background image.

  3. Font color choice is important. Dark backgrounds should have light text and light backgrounds should have dark text. Be sure that your text is readable if you are using a background color or image. Be very careful when choosing your colors. NEON colors are not recommended. Your content can be fabulous but if you do not make it visually appealing, not only won't they come back, they won't stay the first time.  Not all computers see the same color hues.

  4. Use various font sizes.  It is a good idea to use different font sizes, bold, and italics when composing your page.  It makes it easier for your visitors to read or scan your page.  If you are using a background image or color, you may want to bold your text or change colors so that it is very easy to read.  It is not a good idea to use many different fonts on a page.  See Web Font Basics for more insight on fonts.

  5. Give credit to where you got your graphics. Be sure to read the terms  given when using an image from someone else's website. You may be asked to provide a link back to the website where you got the graphic.  Some websites will offer a small graphic that they ask you to place on your site.  Some require nothing at all.  You can place the credits at the bottom of the page or create a page for credits.
