Course Goals: To meet the Standards
of Learning through a variety of writing, reading and speaking projects and
assignments.
Supplies
For this class, students will need:
1. A thick, sturdy, three-ring binder with six tabbed sections.
2. Loose-leaf paper
3. Writing instruments (no yellow, orange or other light colors! If I can’t read
it, I can’t grade it and that’s not good for you.)
Classroom Policies
1. Come to class daily and with all materials needed for work.
2. Exhibit respectful, disciplined behavior
3. Put in study time at home.
4. Complete all assignments on time and to the best of your ability. Some
assignments will not be accepted late while others may have 10pts. Deducted for
each day that they are late. This rule does not apply to work late due to an
absence.
Journals
Students will be required to turn in 5 journal entries twice each 6 weeks. Each
journal entry will be graded as follows:
5pts – neatness
15pts – content – You must have at least half of a page and you must answer the
question or respond to the writing prompt in an appropriate manner.
20 pts each times 5 = 100pts
Quotes Test
Each 6 weeks students will have an open notebook test based on the quotations
that are written on the board each day. This activity instills book-keeping
skills and responsibility; plus the quotes are really neat too!
AR
- In this class you may read books that aren't on the AR list. You simply
must give me time to read the book and make a quiz. I have to read lots of
books, so don't count on the book that you ask me to read as a basis to meet
your goal. Books that you have me make quizzes for should be more like the
icing on the cake, in regards to earning points. I do the best that I can.
If you don't want to run the chance of not getting points then I suggest you
just make sure the book has an AR quiz before hand.
Textbooks – Holt's Elements of Literature and Elements of Language (Yellow and
Green Books)
Mug Shot Sentences
Students will have two mug shot sentences on the board several times a week.
They are sentences that are incorrect and need to be corrected. Every two weeks
mug shot sentences will be taken up for a grade. Mug Shots will count as a
homework grade.
Grading Procedures
Students will take many quizzes and have plenty of homework. Quizzes count as a
regular grade and each homework assignment will be given a points value. For
example an assignment with 37 questions might be worth 37 points. So a score of
37 would actually be a 100% grade. Test will count double.
Make up work - The school board policy will be followed.
“A student with an excused absence from school is entitled to make up missed
work. The responsibility to make up missed work lies with the student and must
be completed within five days after returning to school unless other
arrangements are made with the teacher or administration.”
