Each day your child will come into the room to find work on the board that will begin his/her daily routine. This consists of writing sentences neatly (there are usually 3). This is to assess their ability to copy from the board correctly as well as check on their handwriting skills. They will then need to complete their Meeting Master. This master helps me assess their knowledge and mastery of concepts we are learning in math. It will include time, money, ID of a secret number’s place value, and a count of numbers. The goal is to get a sticker beside the day’s lesson which indicates a perfect paper. Both of these should be completed within the 30 minute timeframe between 8:30 – 9:00. In second grade we have flexible reading grouping to best address where your child is reading. It is flexible so that your child can move up or down as best fits his/her working level. We want your child to be a successful reader in every way and will do everything we can to make that possible.
Choices are a big part of 2nd grade. Each day your child will make choices about his/her work and behavior. They need to realize that THEY are the ones who are responsible for that choice. There will always be one choice that is the best. They will also learn that there are consequences for those choices, some which are good and others that are less desirable. They OWN the responsibility for those choices. 2nd grade has made an effort to have a consistent behavior policy. Each class has 3 color levels which represent behavior. Green is the ultimate color and each day they start there. Unacceptable behavior results in a change to yellow, and a final change goes to red if the behavior doesn’t stop. Each six weeks we will have a popcorn/movie party for those who have been successful with their good behavior for those six weeks. We want to do something for those students who know and show the appropriate behavior here at school. I’m looking forward to an exciting year of learning with your child.
