Virginia Standards of Learning- currently in effect for Virginia Public Schools. This includes all subject areas and grade levels.

2003 Released SOL Tests This includes all grade levels and subject areas except History and Social Science (see below).

Virginia SOL Release of Spring 2003 History and Social Science Tests Ten released items for each of the history tests are available. Great place to get sample questions for practice.

Virginia SOLs and Assistance
Thanks to Tami Maloney and Poquoson Schools for sharing these great resources for grades 3, 5, 8 and EOC tests. All tests are made with Hot Potatoes using the SOL released test items. The 2003 released items tests need Internet Explorer 6.0 to work correctly.

Middle School SOL Pretests This site provides links to online practice tests in the four core area SOLs for grades 6, 7 and 8. These interactive tests enable you to receive instant feedback on correct answers and scoring. Thanks to Beverley Manor Middle School in Augusta Co. for sharing these resources.

Jefferson Lab's Science, Math, and Technology SOL Practice Tests This site has online tests for grades 3, 5, & 8 math and science, grades 5 and 8 technology, and end of course tests for earth science, chemistry, algebra I & II, and geometry.

Technology SOL Review This site from Shenandoah County Public Schools provides tests for the 5th and 8th grade computer technology SOLs.

Elementary Test Prep Center This site provides lessons, practice activities, and teacher resources in Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies. This site was designed for the NY tests, but provides a great resource in numerous areas related to our SOLs.

Google This one is my favorite! This site can be searched using different languages. Great for foreign language teachers or ESL students. Click on the advanced link for these features.

Google Image Search Searches for images only! A great tool for finding those pictures you need for visual learners.

Tekmom's Search Tools for Students This site includes search and reference tools to find just about anything.

Tekmom's "How to Cite a Web Resource" A great resource to teach students to give credit where credit is due, by creating a reference for every online resource they use. Tekmom shows students how to cite text and images found on the web.

Factmonster Awesome research tool for kids including an almanac, atlas, dictionary and encyclopedia.

Yahooligans Web Guide for Kids. This has a link to the Kid's Almanac.

KidsClick A search Engine that allows you to search by reading level. Just click on advanced search.

Virginia's Community of Learning  A curriculum, instructional, technology and professional development resource for Virginia and worldwide educators designed to support classroom and learning activities for teachers, students, administrators, parents and future educators.

Portaportal  Portaportal is a freeweb based bookmarking utility that lets you store links to your favorite websites online. Now your bookmarks are no longer limited to any one machine. You can categorize the bookmarks and have students log into your site for easy access to any web sites you want them to visit. You can visit one of my sites by typing sshaw or hopewell in guest access and click on visit. Click here to print out the tutorial for setting up your own site.

Trackstar  TrackStar is your free starting point for online lessons and activities. Simply collect web sites, enter them into TrackStar, add annotations for your students, and you have an interactive, online lesson called a Track. Create your own Track or use one of the hundreds of thousands already made by other educators.

Rubistar  RubiStar is a free tool to help teachers make quality rubrics. This is so quick and easy to use!

I Keep Bookmarks "IKeepBookmarks.com allows you to upload, and keep, your bookmarks on the web for free. You can access them at any time, from any computer... anywhere!

Free Translation "FreeTranslation allows users to obtain free translations of both text and web pages. The translation is generated by a computer, displayed instantly and the user is dynamically shown the cost of having the same text professionally translated or edited by Click2Translate Express." You can copy and paste the translation to use in letters, worksheets, etc.

This Word document contains simple questions and answers or graphics that would be useful for a review of the grade 3 standards.

Social Studies Curriculum Resources Poster Sets
These pdf files can be opened with Acrobat Reader and printed or inserted into multimedia presentations to review the K-3 and Virginia Studies SOLs. They are a GREAT resource for reviewing all K-3 SOLs with 3rd graders and also for creating bulletin boards or art projects.

Language Arts & Author Sites          

Connections   Connecting books to the Virginia SOLs. A database of over one thousand works of children's literature (K-6) and their connection to the Virginia Standards of Learning is provided by Fairfax Co. Schools. This is searchable by keyword, SOL subject area/SOL subcategory, and grade level. There are plans to add books for grades 7-8 for the 2005-2006 school year.

Power Proofreading   This is an interactive proofreading game from Houghton Mifflin for grades 2-8. Each level has a variety of passages and skills for students to use. Once the editing is complete, a certificate will come up on the screen that can be printed with the student's name.

Children's Storybooks Online   Free online interactive stories for kids of all ages.

Starfall   Just AWESOME! This learn to read site combines explicit instruction in letter-sound relationships, word recognition skills and reading comprehension strategies with opportunities to apply and practice these skills all for FREE.

Mrs. Lawson's Reading Corner  Mrs. Lawson has fantastic for students, teachers, & parents

This is an interactive reference database for young users. You can find just about everything here and each article is assigned a reading level.

Ms. Shaw's Electronic Resources Page She developed this site to teach CT SOL 5.3 (use electronic encyclopedias, almanacs, indexes and catalogs).  Each resource is defined with active links to many resources for students to use.

The Internet Public Library Youth Division There are links to dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, and other sites for homework help.
