Bristol Virginia Public Schools
Bus Rules and Regulations

School bus drivers are directly in charge of the students who board their buses. The school system tells each driver to maintain discipline at all times, while treating all students with respect.  The driver's job is to make certain that no student on the bus is mistreated and that every rider is safe from harm.

Please note the following specific rules, which every student is expected to follow, and which apply to field trips as well as trips to and from the school:

(1) Be seated immediately after you enter the bus.  If necessary, your driver
may assign you to a specific seat.

(2) No student is allowed to stand or move from place to place during the trip,
     nor at stops.

(3) Do not eat, drink, or use tobacco products on a bus.

(4) Loud, boisterous, or profane language on a bus is not tolerated.

(5) Do not tease others, scuffle, trip, hold, or use your hands, feet, or body in an
     objectionable manner.

(6) You may not open or close any windows or doors except when you have the
driver's permission. You must keep your hands and head inside the bus.

(7) You may not enter or leave the bus until the bus comes to a complete stop
and the driver opens the bus door.

(8) Upon the recommendation of your driver, school authorities may deny you
the privilege of riding any school bus for a specified period of time.

(9) When your driver approaches and crosses railways, you must keep
     absolutely silent.

If you are riding the bus on a field trip, as well as to and from school, you are expected to behave in an appropriate manner.  Follow the rules listed above.

NOTE: Transportation on school buses is a privilege, not a right.  If any student persists in violating these rules, the school system reserves the right to take the student off all division buses for a set period of time.  The parent then is responsible for getting the student to and from school.  Failure to attend school can result in the filing of truancy charges with the appropriate official.

Teach Your Child To Get On And Off  The Bus Safely:

  • When getting on the bus, stay away from the danger zone and wait for the driver's signal.  Board the bus one at a time.
  • When getting off the bus, look before stepping off the bus to be sure no cars are passing on the shoulder (side of the road). Move away from the bus.
  • Before crossing the street, take five "giant steps" out from the front of the bus, or until the driver's face can be seen.  Wait for the driver to signal that it is safe to cross.
  • Look left-right-left when coming to the edge of the bus to make sure traffic is stopped.  Keep watching traffic when crossing.
