INTRODUCTION

Today many students will receive awards and recognition for their accomplishments. None of these are any more important than the recognition that goes to every member of the Class of 2008. In a few short weeks, you will be graduating, and you will leave with us your distinction as a class. We will remember your personalities, your scholarship, your talents, and you enthusiasm. Each of you will take with you a sense of unity of time and place as a graduate of Virginia High School.
Some of you will enter the world of work or perhaps take a place in the Armed Forces. Many of you will continue you education in college or trade school, and all of you will continue to move into a society that we, as you supporters, hope will bring you an uncommon degree of success and happiness. All of us honor and applaud you today as the graduating class of 2008.
Presenting many of these awards will be special guests from the community and school who represent a variety of organizations and individuals. Our awards guests are the mainstays of the success of today's program; their time, enthusiasm, interest, and generosity make each award a special event. We appreciate the vote of confidence given to our students an to our school. Thank you, presenters, for being here today and for contributing to the success of this program for the Class of 2008. We look forward to introducing you individually and asking you to come to the microphone to make your presentations.
The recipients of the awards have been determined by a variety of ways. Several students will be recognized for highest averages in particular classes or departments and for achievement in competitive areas. Other winners have been chosen by committees organized to review applications or screen the class population for students meeting established criteria. Nominations from the faculty are many times the beginning point in a given selection process with the final choice resulting from majority vote. Among the most important awards are the Senior Superlatives that are selected by the members of the senior class.
Many of the awards carry the honor of having the winner's name engraved on a school trophy. These are displayed today on the awards table and will be given to you to take with you to the table to enjoy. After the program is over today, perhaps a camera will catch the event for you. To safe guard the trophies, you will need to return them to the awards table. Later today, these will be placed in the trophy case for permanent display for you and for the many students who will follow you.
Ms. McClanahan and Ms. Boger will assist in the presentations today.
Congratulations to all of the winners today and congratulations to every member of the Class of 2008. This is your day.
