The Business Program offerings are designed to help students develop business skills such as computer applications and/or office related skills in preparation for entering business occupations and/or for pursuing additional education.

 

BUSINESS COOPERATIVE OFFICE EDUCATION                                        1 hour/1 unit                6799A, 6799B                                    Grades 11-12

Students enrolled in the co-op program work part of the day in an approved business or office position.  Students must also be enrolled in one of the following business courses:  Advanced Computer Information Systems, Desktop/Multimedia and Web Technologies, Advanced Desktop/Multimedia and Web Technologies, C++ Programming, IB Technology Information, Global Societt, Business Law, or Accounting.  Students can receive one co-op credit for a minimum of 270 hours of work (approximately 8 hours a week) and two co-op credits for 540 hours (approximately 15 hours a week).  Students are supervised and graded by the employer as well as a business teacher/coordinator.

COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS                                                      1 hour/1 unit                                6612                                   Grades 9 -12

            Students apply problem-solving skills to real-life situations through a) database, spreadsheet, and word processing software; b) charting; and c) integrated activities. They work individually and in groups to explore data/telecommunications, operating systems, and networking principles.

ADVANCED COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS                                   1 hour/1 unit                                6613                                  Grades 10-12

Students study advanced integrated applications, programming (such as Visual Basic and HTML), web page design, telecommunications, and the impact of new and emerging technologies in each of these areas.

            Students examine the foundations of the American legal system.  They explore economic and social concepts as they relate to legal principles and to business and personal laws.

ACCOUNTING I

            Students study the basic principles, concepts, and practices in the accounting cycle.  Students learn fundamental accounting procedures, using a manual and an electronic system.

ACCOUNTING II

Accounting II uses an Automated Accounting approach to incorporate skills and principles from Accounting I. It provides  a hands-on approach to learning how modern computerized accounting systems function using popular industry based software such as QuickBooks. Students will also integrate accounting skills with other business applications such as spreadsheets and word processors and relate it to careers and employment in the accounting field.
 

DESKTOP, MULTIMEDIA, AND WEB TECHNOLOGIES                                1 hour/1 unit                               6630                               Grades 10-12

            Students develop proficiency in using desktop publishing software to create a variety of business publications.  Students work with sophisticated hardware and software to develop multimedia presentations.

             ADVANCED DESKTOP, MULTIMEDIA, AND WEB TECHNOLOGIES

            This course is an extension of Design, Multimedia and Web Technology presentations.  Students work extensively on web site design using Macromedia Dream weaver and Macromedia Flash.  Students learn video editing and production using the latest technology and produce the Cat Chat news show.

            GAMING AND ROBOTICS PROGRAMMING

Dual Enrollment
This Virginia Highlands Community college dual enrollment course provides an introduction to programming in a collaborative learning environment.  Students will use Alice software to  create gaming situations along with Legos and robotics.  Students will also be introduced to the C++ programming language.

C++ COMPUTER PROGRAMMING                                                             1 hour/1 unit                             6641                                     Grades 10-12

Student Students learn to write and execute computer programs for business applications.  The students will learn the high-level language to the C++ programming language.
Prerequisite: Computer Information Systems recommended

IB INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN A GLOBAL SOCIETY
1 hour/1 unit                            IB6613                                  Grades 11-12    

This course studies and evaluates the impact of information technology on individuals and society.  It explores the advantages and disadvantages of the use of digitalized information at the local and global level. It provides a framework for students to make informed judgments and decisions about the use of IT within social contexts.   this is a 5-point course and students must be at least a junior to enroll.
Prerequisite:  Proficient computer skills and recommendation of instructor

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

BUSINESS--INDIVIDUALIZED  EDUCATION PROGRAM                              1 hour/1 unit                             6745                                       Grades 9-12

This course is designed to serve students with special needs who desire to learn keyboarding skills using the touch-system. Emphasis is placed on mastering the alphabetic keyboard, numeric keyboard and document preparation including letters, memoranda, tables, and reports. Students are also introduced to basic word processing skills using Microsoft Word. The course is developed cooperatively between business teachers and special education personnel based on each student’s individual needs.

Student Students complete the Office Specialist sequence identified locally or progress in the sequence until prepared to transfer into other business courses. Students develop skills in areas including keyboarding, word processing, office procedures, and records management.

OFFICE SPECIALIST II                                                                              1 hour/1 unit                               6741                                   Grades 10-12

            This is the second year of the Office Specialist sequence. Completion of Office Specialist I and II may prepare students for certification exams for Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS).
Prerequisite:  Office Specialist I

OFFICE SPECIALIST III                                                                             1 hour/1 unit                                6742                                  Grades 11-12

This is tThis is the third year of the Office Specialist sequence.
Prerequisite:  Office Specialist II

OFFICE SPECIALIST IV                                                                             1 hour/1 unit                                 6743                                      Grades 12

This is the fourth year of the Office Specialist sequence. Students complete the Office Specialist sequence identified locally or progress in the sequence until prepared to transfer into other business courses. Students continue skill development and enhancement in the areas of keyboarding, word processing, office procedures, and records management.
Students who enroll in the Trade and Industrial Education program will be prepared to enter the work force or further their education in the areas of auto technology, cosmetology, culinary arts, computer networking and repair, drafting, electricity and electronics or maintenance.
