The Business Program offerings are
designed to help students develop business skills such as computer
applications and/or office related skills in preparation for
entering business occupations and/or for pursuing additional
education.
BUSINESS COOPERATIVE OFFICE EDUCATION 1

Students enrolled in the co-op
program work part of the day in an approved business or office
position. Students must also be enrolled in one of the following
business courses: Advanced Computer Information Systems,
Desktop/Multimedia and Web Technologies, Advanced Desktop/Multimedia
and Web Technologies, C++ Programming, IB Technology Information,
Global Societt, Business
Law, or Accounting. Students can receive one co-op credit for a
minimum of 270 hours of work (approximately 8 hours a week) and two
co-op credits for 540 hours (approximately 15 hours a week).
Students are supervised and graded by the employer as well as a
business teacher/coordinator.

COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Students apply problem-solving skills to real-life situations
through a) database, spreadsheet, and word processing software; b)
charting; and c) integrated activities. They work individually and
in groups to explore data/telecommunications, operating systems, and
networking principles.

Accounting II uses an Automated
Accounting approach to incorporate skills and principles from
Accounting I. It provides a hands-on approach to learning how
modern computerized accounting systems function using popular
industry based software such as QuickBooks. Students will also
integrate accounting skills with other business applications such as
spreadsheets and word processors and relate it to careers and
employment in the accounting field.
DESKTOP, MULTIMEDIA, AND WEB TECHNOLOGIES

to create a variety of business publications. Students work with
sophisticated hardware and software to develop multimedia
presentations.

This Virginia Highlands Community college dual enrollment course
provides an introduction to programming in a collaborative learning
environment. Students will use Alice software to create
gaming situations along with Legos and robotics. Students will
also be introduced to the C++ programming language.

This course studies and evaluates
the impact of information technology on individuals and society.
It explores the advantages and disadvantages of the use of
digitalized information at the local and global level. It provides a
framework for students to make informed judgments and decisions
about the use of IT within social contexts. this is a
5-point course and students must be at least a junior to enroll.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS
BUSINESS--INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PROGRAM

This course is
designed to serve students with special needs who desire to learn
keyboarding skills using the touch-system. Emphasis is placed on
mastering the alphabetic keyboard, numeric keyboard and document
preparation including letters, memoranda, tables, and reports.
Students are also introduced to basic word processing skills using
Microsoft Word. The course is developed cooperatively between
business teachers and special education personnel based on each
student’s individual needs.

Students who enroll in the Trade and Industrial Education program
will be prepared to enter the work force or further their education
in the areas of auto technology, cosmetology, culinary arts,
computer networking and repair, drafting, electricity and
electronics or maintenance.
