Successful completion of the required English class will be a prerequisite for enrolling in the next required English class and for being promoted to the next grade level homeroom.  A student, for example, must successfully complete English 9 before being allowed to enroll in English 10 and before being assigned to a tenth grade homeroom.

SIGNING UP FOR THE APPROPRIATE CLASS IN NINTH, TENTH, and ELEVENTH GRADE ENGLISH

 While students may, with a waiver, elect to take a class more difficult than his/her prior performance indicates, students may not sign up for a level below his/her ability and/or performance level.  The only exception is for those students who qualify for Honors, AP, or IB English, but, with parental permission, elect Academic English.

ENGLISH 9  1 hour/1 unit                       1130G                      Grade 9

While the core of the curriculum of all English classes is the Virginia Standards of Learning, English 9 goes beyond the basic minimum state requirements. Instruction in this course is both career and college-preportory.

ACADEMIC ENGLISH 9  1 hour/1 unit             1130              Grade 9

Academic English 9 is designed for students who are reading on or above grade level.  Instruction in this course is almost exclusively college-preparatory.  Assignment to this level is NOT limited to those students who plan to attend college.

HONORS ENGLISH 9 (Pre IB, AP)  1 hour/1 unit              1130H               Grade 9

Honors English 9 is designed for students reading above grade level.  Students who may be interested in taking AP or IB English in the eleventh and twelfth grades should elect Honors English 9.  This course provides intensive instruction within a highly structured, whole-class setting.  Students’ reading assignments are usually longer and more numerous than those in Academic English 9.  Writing and discussion activities are frequent.  Students who qualify for Honors English 9  may, with parental permission, elect to take Academic English 9 instead.

While the core of the curriculum of all English classes is the Virginia Standards of Learning, English 10 goes beyond the basic minimum state requirements.  Instruction in this course is both developmental and college-preparatory.

Academic English 10 is designed for students who are reading on grade level, or within two years of their grade level.  While the core of the curriculum of all English classes is the Virginia Standards of Learning, Academic English 10 goes beyond the minimum state requirements. While the focus of this course is college-preparatory, assignment to this level is NOT limited to students who plan to attend college.

HONORS ENGLISH 10 (Pre IB,AP)  1 hour/1 unit              1140H             Grade 10

Honors English 10 is designed for students who are reading above grade level. IB/ HONORS ENGLISH 11 (Pre IB, AP)   1 hour/1 unit          1150H            Grade 11

IB/Honors English 11 is designed for students reading above grade level. This course provides an in-depth study of the major genres of literature and a framework to refine other language skills. Primary units emphasize standards for literary analysis and essay writing.  The student learns the concepts necessary to take the Advanced Placement and the IB English examinations following completion of the senior curriculum.  Formal oral presentations and essays are collected to meet partial requirements for the International Baccalaureate oral and written examinations.

While the core curriculum is the Virginia Standards of Learning, English 12 goes beyond the basic minimum requirements. Instruction is both developmental and college- preparatory.

ACADEMIC ENGLISH 12 1 hour/1 unit           1160A            Grade 12

Instruction in this course is almost exclusively college-preparatory. Assignment to this level is NOT limited to those students who plan to attend college.

 AP/IB ENGLISH 12  1 hour/1 unit                1196               Grade 12

This college-preparatory level course prepares students for the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams. It approaches English literature in an interpretive, analytical, and critical manner with an emphasis on British authors. Students engage in extensive writing experiences. 

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE  1 hour/1 unit     5710     Grades 9-12

This course is designed to assist students for whom English is a second language.  Students will begin to acquire language skills necessary to be successful in other courses.  This course counts as elective credit only and may not substitute for required English classes.

JOURNALISM I YEARBOOK  1 hour/1 unit          1200           Grades 10-12

This is an elective course that prepares students for work on the school yearbook, the VIRGINIAN.  The class provides training in managing, planning, selling advertisements and subscriptions, designing layout, copywriting and photography.

Prerequisite:  English teacher’s recommendation

JOURNALISM II YEARBOOK  1 hour/1 unit         1210          Grades 11-12

Students in this class are responsible for the publication of the yearbook, the VIRGINIAN. 

Prerequisite:  English teacher’s recommendation and Journalism I

JOURNALISM III YEARBOOK  1 hour/1 unit        1211          Grade 12

This course in yearbook is designed for experienced journalism students who will be assuming major staff positions for the publication of the yearbook.

Prerequisite:  Yearbook I and II and English teacher’s recommendation

SPEECH  1 hour/1 unit                      1300                     Grades 11-12

This course is designed to help students gain an understanding of the essential elements of public speaking, as well as exploring successful styles and techniques of oral communication. These students form the core of the Forensics Team, which competes in speaking events and tournaments at the district, regional, and state levels.  They also speak to classes in other schools and to local organizations.

EXPLORATION IN DRAMA I  1 hour/1 unit        1410        Grades 9-12

This class is designed to help students gain a basic understanding of acting and other theatre skills. These skills are taught through games, role-playing, monologues, dialogues, and characterization. The class also explores stage production and is responsible for operating the stage for many activities, including the annual Spring Festival.

EXPLORATION IN DRAMA II  1 hour/1unit       1420        Grades 10-12

This course is designed for second year drama students.  Students will perform high level monologues, scenes and scripts using the Stanislavski technique.  Students will also perform in the Spring Festival and other school productions.
 

STAGE PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTION  1 hour/1unit 

1420                Grades 11-12

This course is designed for students who have completed Drama II. Students will read, analyze and perform one act, full-length and musical productions. There will be a strong emphasis on characterization, role-playing and improvisation. Students will create, write , and perform scripts for school productions.

Prerequisite: Drama II and teacher recommendation

READING  1 hour/1 unit                     1180                     Grade 9

This is a part of the ninth grade transition program. It is designed for students who require additional instruction to strengthen reading and study skills. The course counts as one elective credit. It may not be used as one of the required English credits.

SPEECH APPLICATIONS  1 hour/1 unit         1395        Grade 9-12

This course is designed for students working toward a Modified              Standard Diploma.  

Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation is required for enrollment
