FRENCH I

that reflect practical situations of daily life. The culture
of the French-speaking world is interwoven into each lesson.
Participation in class, memorization of vocabulary and verb

French II emphasizes the ability to
communicate in the language. The student will continue to
develop and apply the skills acquired in French I.

application of the skills acquired in the previous levels.

FRENCH IV

This course will begin the student’s preparation for taking the IB
French examination at the standard level. There is an emphasis
on strengthening applications of skills learned in the previous
levels. Using appropriate vocabulary and grammar, the student
will participate in oral, reading comprehension, and writing
activities. The student will be required to make formal
presentations and to take part in interviews and discussions.
The student will be required to extract information from different
literary sources, such as newspapers, magazines, short stories, and
essays and to write compositions and dialogues. Individual
portfolios will document the student’s progress.

FRENCH V

This course will continue the student’s
preparation for taking the final IB French examination at the
standard level.
The
aim of this course is to enable students to clearly communicate
ideas orally and in writing. Students will develop the ability to
describe, narrate, paraphrase, compare and contrast ideas presented
in a wide range of contexts and settings through the study of course
themes. Grammar and vocabulary review and study will be derived from
the various texts that are studied. A wide variety of texts will be
used. These include, newspapers, magazines, videos, taped
recordings, as well as textbooks.

LATIN I

Grades 9-12
Latin
I emphasizes mastering vocabulary, basic grammar, and forms
necessary for translating. Language structure is explained
through sentence translations. The course also includes units
studying Roman history, life, and mythology. The influence of
Latin on the English language is emphasized through word study and
etymology. Memorization of vocabulary and forms, and daily
study outside of class are necessary for success in Latin I.

LATIN II

Latin II is a continuation of vocabulary
work and a study of more complicated grammar. The goal
is to prepare the student with the skills necessary for translating
original Latin works. The course also includes a study of
Roman history and culture.

LATIN III

This course includes an intense review of vocabulary and grammar
with a focus on Roman history through the works of Livy and Caesar.

LATIN IV and V

Latin IV and V will be offered when there
is a sufficient number of students to constitute a class. In
Latin IV and V, the emphasis is on major prose authors and poets, in
alternate years. The course will utilize the works of
particular authors to study periods of Latin literature.
