FRENCH I   
1 hour/1 unit                                5110                                    Grades 9-12

Students are introduced to the French language through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities that reflect practical situations of daily life.  The culture of the French-speaking world is interwoven into each lesson.  Participation in class, memorization of vocabulary and verb conjugations and daily practice are essential for success in French I.

Prerequisite: A grade of  “C” or better in English, and English teacher’s recommendation

 

FRENCH II

French II emphasizes the ability to communicate in the language.  The student will continue to develop and apply the skills acquired in French I.

Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or better in French I and teacher recommendation

 

FRENCH III        
1 hour/1 unit                               5130                                   Grades 9-12

French III is a more intense study and application of the skills acquired in the previous levels.

Prerequisite:  A grade of “C” or better in French II and teacher recommendation.

 

FRENCH IV          
1 hour/1 unit                               5140                                   Grades 11-12

This course will begin the student’s preparation for taking the IB French examination at the standard level.  There is an emphasis on strengthening applications of skills learned in the previous levels.  Using appropriate vocabulary and grammar, the student will participate in oral, reading comprehension, and writing activities.  The student will be required to make formal presentations and to take part in interviews and discussions.  The student will be required to extract information from different literary sources, such as newspapers, magazines, short stories, and essays and to write compositions and dialogues.  Individual portfolios will document the student’s progress.

Prerequisite:  A grade of “B” or better in French III and teacher recommendation

 

FRENCH V        
1 hour/1 unit                                 5150                                 Grades 11-12

This course will continue the student’s preparation for taking the final IB French examination at the standard level. 
The aim of this course is to enable students to clearly communicate ideas orally and in writing. Students will develop the ability to describe, narrate, paraphrase, compare and contrast ideas presented in a wide range of contexts and settings through the study of course themes. Grammar and vocabulary review and study will be derived from the various texts that are studied. A wide variety of texts will be used. These include, newspapers, magazines, videos, taped recordings, as well as textbooks.

Prerequisite:  A grade of “B” or better in French IV and teacher recommendation

 

LATIN I              
1 hour/1 unit                                  5310                                  Grades 9-12

Latin I emphasizes mastering vocabulary, basic grammar, and forms necessary for translating.  Language structure is explained through sentence translations.  The course also includes units studying Roman history, life, and mythology.  The influence of Latin on the English language is emphasized through word study and etymology.  Memorization of vocabulary and forms, and daily study outside of class are necessary for success in Latin I.

LATIN II         
1 hour/1 unit                                 5320                                   Grades 9-12

Latin II is a continuation of vocabulary work and a study of  more complicated grammar.  The goal is to prepare the student with the skills necessary for translating original Latin works.  The course also includes a study of Roman history and culture.

Prerequisite:  A grade of “C” or better in Latin I and teacher recommendation

 

LATIN III
1 hour/1 unit                                5330                                  Grades 10-12

This course includes an intense review of vocabulary and grammar with a focus on Roman history through the works of Livy and Caesar.

Prerequisite:  A grade of “C” or better in Latin II and teacher recommendation.

 

LATIN IV and V      
1 hour/1 unit                          5340 & 5350                             Grades 11-12

Latin IV and V will be offered when there is a sufficient number of students to constitute a class.  In Latin IV and V, the emphasis is on major prose authors and poets, in alternate years.  The course will utilize the works of particular authors to study periods of Latin literature.

Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or better in Latin III (IV) and teacher recommendation

 

SPANISH I
