EARTH SCIENCE I

This course includes integrated science topics with an emphasis on oceanography, geology, and meteorology. To enroll in this course, the student must be working toward a Modified Standard Diploma.

EARTH SCIENCE  
1 hour/1 unit                                   4210                                   Grade 9-12 This course includes oceanography, geology, meteorology, and astronomy.  Laboratory experiments and demonstrations are used to develop a strong scientific vocabulary. An end of course SOL test is given.

ADVANCED EARTH SCIENCE  
1 hour/1 unit                                    4210A                               Grade 9-12 This course is designed for students who can master science concepts at a quicker pace. It includes oceanography, geology, meteorology, and astronomy.  Laboratory experiments and demonstrations are included to show important principles.  Special emphasis is given to developing a strong scientific vocabulary. An end of course SOL test is given.

BIOLOGY I

                                 4611                                   Grade 9-12 This course includes integrated science topics from Earth Science and Biology, with an emphasis on major life processes. Particular attention will be paid to human biology. To enroll in this course the student must be working toward a Modified Standard Diploma.

BIOLOGY

This course focuses on the study of the basic biological principles such as cytology, cell division, photosynthesis, respiration, evolution, genetics, and taxonomy. Emphasis is given to a comparative study of the structures and life functions of representative members of each of the  six kingdoms. An end of course SOL test is given.

 ADVANCED BIOLOGY  
1 hour/1 unit                                  4310A                                 Grade 9-12

ECOLOGY

In this course students will learn how organisms interact with their environment. They will analyze how ecosystems work, biomes, populations, biodiversity, water, air, land, renewable and nonrenewable resources, waste, the environment and human health, and economics, policies, and the future.

CHEMISTRY I  
1 hour/1 unit                                4410                                  Grades 10-12
This course emphasizes the understanding of chemical principles involving concepts and mathematics.  Laboratory work is an integral part of the program. An end of course SOL test is given.

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Algebra I and Geometry with a “C” or better. Students should also be currently enrolled in or have completed Algebra II.

PHYSICS    
1hour/1 unit

Dual Enrollment
This course includes the study of matter, energy forces, light, sound, magnetism, work, power and mechanical energy.  Students who intend to major in a math or science-related field in college should enroll in this course.  Laboratory work is an important part of this course.

Prerequisite: “C” or better average in Geometry and Algebra II or “C” or better in Geometry and be currently enrolled in Algebra II. Students who successfully complete this course will earn dual enrollment credit with VHCC.

IB BIOLOGY  II              
2 hours/2 units                      IB 4380, 4390                                Grades 12
This course is designed for the science student who wishes to pursue further study in biology.  Students study basic biological principles such as cytology, photosynthesis, respiration, cell reproduction, and genetics.  The course also includes the study of human anatomy and physiology, neurobiology, behavior, plant science, classification and diversity, and ecology.  Students will participate in a Group IV project as part of the IB internal assessment. 

Prerequisite:  Students must have taken both Advanced Biology and Chemistry I and have a “B” average or higher in both courses, or must have the recommendation of the Advanced Biology and Chemistry teachers.

Human Anatomy and Physiology I   
1 hour/ 1 unit                          4100 GS (BIO 141-142)            Grades 11-12 Dual Enrollment

This Governor’s School course will present an integrated approach to human anatomy and physiology along with microbiology and pathology. The structures and function of the human body will be investigated. Upon completion of this course, students will understand the scope and subdivision of anatomy and physiology as well as the chemistry of the human body as it relates to the health sciences. Virtual laboratory activities and simulations will be integrated into the course. Students who successfully complete this course will earn dual enrollment credit from Virginia Highlands Community College.

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Biology and Chemistry with a "B" or better.

ASTRONOMY I  
1 hour/ 1 unit               4260 GS (NAS 131-132)                  Grades 11-12     Dual Enrollment

Astronomy continues to enjoy a golden age of discovery and exploration. With new technologies and innovative theoretical insights, the study of the universe has never been more exciting. In this course students will learn of these new adventures in the study of the oldest science. Students will complete projects such as building a telescope and star finder. Students who successfully complete this course will earn dual enrollment credit from Virginia Highlands Community College.

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Algebra II
