Students who enroll in the Trade and Industrial Education program will be prepared to enter the work force or further their education in the areas of auto technology, cosmetology, culinary arts, child care, drafting, electricity and electronics.

The first year of the program consists of a one-hour block everyday.

The second year of the program consists of a two-hour block everyday.

The third year of the program consists of a three-hour block everyday, stressing hands-on repair in an actual automotive shop setting.

AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECHNOLOGY I
1 hour/1 unit                  8506                      Grades 10-12

The first year of this course introduces the student to the field of automotive technology, covering careers, tools, equipment, use of manuals, safety, fluid maintenance, fasteners, gaskets, seals, the fundamentals of engine construction and operation, and engine tune-ups.The course meets for one hour everyday.

AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECHNOLOGY II

2 hours/2 units               8507                       Grades10-12

The second year combines theory with service, covering all vehicle systems. The subject matter is arranged so the student first studies fundamental operation and system construction. When the system is fully understood, the student moves to diagnosis, service, and system repair.This course meets for a two-hour block each day.

Prerequisite: Automotive Service Techonology I

AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECHNOLOGY III
3 hours/3units                8508                       Grades11-12

The third year consists of hands-on diagnosis and repair in an actual automotive shop setting. Third year students establish their own methods of troubleshooting and develop skills in repairing fuel injection systems, transmissions, and suspension systems. Students are also tested on their automotive knowledge by taking the ASE certification test. This course meets for a three hour block each day.

COMPUTER NETWORKING I

Dual Enrollment

This is the first course of a two-year sequence designed to provide students with classroom and laboratory experience in current and emerging networking technology that will empower them to enter employment and/or further education and training in the computer network field. Particular emphasis is given to the use of decision-making and problem-solving techniques in applying science, mathematics and communications to solve networking problems. Computer Networking I and Computer Networking II are dual enrollment courses. Students may receive both high school and college credit for these courses. This is a dual enrollment course through Virginia Highlands Community College.

COMPUTER NETWORKING II

Dual Enrollment

This is the second course of a two-year sequence designed to provide students with the knowledge to successfully take and pass the C.N.A. exam. Laboratory assignments deal with the total operation of a LAN. Computer Networking I and Computer Networking II are dual enrollment courses. Students may receive both high school and college credit for these courses.  

Prerequisite: Computer Networking.

This is a dual enrollment through Virginia Highlands Community College.

 VOICE AND DATA CABLING

This course is designed for students interested in the physical aspects of voice and data network cabling ad installation. This course focuses on cabling issues related to data and voice connections. This hands-on lab-oriented course stresses documentation, design, and installation issues, as well as laboratory safety, on-the-job safety, and working effectively in group environments.

COMPUTER REPAIR

Computer repair is one of the most sought after entry-level positions in industry. This course covers a broad range of hardware, software, and networking technologies. Students will learn how to construct, troubleshoot, service and repair computer systems. They will also learn how to install and maintain basic local area networks.

COSMETOLOGY I

Cosmetology I is a one-period course which introduces students to selected theory and manipulative skills required of a licensed cosmetologist. The course emphasizes safety and sanitation procedures, bacteriology, professional ethics, and the basic skills associated with hair styling and coloring, permanent waving and manicuring procedures.

COSMETOLOGY II     
 2 hours/2 units               8528                     Grade 11

Cosmetology II is a two-period course in which students continue their study of the theory and practice of the manipulative skills required for licensure. The course reinforces the competencies taught in Cosmetology I with emphasis on cosmetic chemistry, facials, wiggery, and chemical relaxing.

COSMETOLOGY III       
3 hours/3 units                8529                    Grade 12

Cosmetology III is a three-period course in which students advance their study of the theory and practice of the manipulative skills required for licensure. The course reinforces the competencies taught in Cosmetology I and II with emphasis on anatomy and physiology, advanced hair design techniques and salon management in preparation for state licensure.

NAIL TECHNOLOGY       
2 hours/2 units

This course prepares students for the Virginia State Board of Cosmetology Nail Technician certification. Students learn safety and sanitation fundamentals, as well as how to apply acrylic, gel, and fiberglass nails and nail tips. Other topics include performing waxing procedures, and managing a salon business. This course meets for a two-hour block each day.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE I

This is the first in a two-year sequence of courses focusing on the field of law enforcement. Students will be introduced to basics of law enforcement, including defining crimes, using safety procedures and equipment, and controlling traffic.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE II

Dual Enrollment

This course is the second year of a two-year sequence. Students will examine criminal investigations; procedures for search and seizure, arresting and maintaining custody of suspects; and court proceedings.                   Prerequisite: Criminal Justice I

CULINARY ARTS I

Students in this course learn the basic requirements for career opportunities in the field of food preparation and service. They learn skills necessary for entry-level employment and continued education. Students will focus on sanitation, recipe usage and safety standards.

 

CULINARY ARTS II       
2 hour/2 unit                   8522                 Grades 11-12

Students will further their skills in recipe usage, management and development. Sanitation and safety will be covered in more depth. Processing, purchasing, ordering, storage and preparation, learn catering and Banquet preparation will be incorporated into this class. Menu development will be emphasized. Baking skills will be developed. This is a dual enrollment class

 CULINARY ARTS III

This course is the last in the sequence. Students will develop management skills and menu skills, and learn catering and banquet preparation in more depth. Students will prepare for industry certification in Prostart.

 HOUSEHOLD MAINTENANCE    
1 hour/1 unit                 8590                 Grades 9-12

In this course, students learn to service a variety of structures, including commercial and industrial buildings, as well as taking care of one’s own home. Topics include basic cleaning, maintenance and repair skills relating to air conditioning, heating, plumbing and electrical systems. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the skills to gain employment in the custodial field.

INTRODUCTION TO EDUCATION FOR EMPLOYMENT

This course prepares students belonging to targeted populations for independent living and productive careers. Students begin to develop employability and independent living skills as they blend their academic and vocational studies to solve real-life problems. This course is available only to selected students with an Individual Education Plan.
