PHILOSOPHY
Library Mission Statement:
The
philosophy of the Virginia High Library is to be an integral part of our
school's curriculum and activities. It is the goal of the library to be
the very center and heart of the school.
|
 |
|
Librarian: Pam
Neal
|
PURPOSE |
|
| The
library functions for the benefit of students and faculty. Library
Services provide a wealth of information found in books, periodicals and
electronic sources. Assistance is given with research papers, extra
curricular projects, leisure reading materials and other library related
activities. |
SCOPE |
|
| The Virginia High School Library collection consists of approximately
nineteen thousand books, two daily newspapers, thirty five magazine
subscriptions, a current variety of DVD's and videotapes based on the current
curriculum and selected online computer services and database. |
 |
HOURS OF OPERATION |
Library
Secretary:
Joann Huskey |
| The
library is open from approximately 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Mrs. Neal will remain open for later hours upon request and student need. |
|
LOAN PERIOD |
|
| Books may be checked out from the library for a
period of three weeks and renewed for additional time. It is suggested
that only two books be checked out at a time. Periodicals, reference books
and audiovisual materials do not circulate. Access to the book collection
is provided by using the computerized card catalog located on the desktop of
each computer. |
 |
RESEARCH TOOLS |
|
The
library has an extensive Reference book collection centered around the core
curriculum of the school. Our system also has access to the following data
bases:
- Encarta
- Gale
- Proquest
- Sirs
- United Streaming
|
COPYING MATERIALS |
|
| A
Xerox machine has been installed for student use in the library. Library-related
materials such as books, magazines, pamphlets, and reference materials
may be copied at no expense to students. |
CIRCULATION
OF MATERIALS |
|
| The
library has a computerized circulation system. Each student's name has
been entered into the computer with an assigned student number. Every book
in the library has a bar code number. When a student checks out a book,
the bar code number is keyed into the computer, and the book is then charged
to the student's identification number. |
COMPUTERIZED
CARD CATALOG |
|
| Access
to the book collection is provided by using the computerized card catalog.
Students may search by author, subject, title, and key word. Two labs are
available. |
VISITATION |
|
The
library is open to students at all times. The English Department schedules
classes for book talks and check-outs at least once every six weeks. The library
maintains both a scheduled and unscheduled routine. Mrs. Neal and Mrs. Leonard
believe that, if you place the right book in the right student's hands, they
should read the rest of their lives. |
DISCIPLINE |
|
| Students
are expected to conduct themselves as ladies and gentlemen and to respect
the rights of other patrons. For the convenience of everyone, students
are requested to remain seated until the bell at the end of each period
and not congregate at the entrance. Discipline problems are handled in
accordance with school policy. |
EXTENDED SERVICES |
|
| The
librarians process interlibrary loan requests for students who are doing
advanced reference work if the necessary materials cannot be located in
the Bristol vicinity. Realizing that the school library is only one source
of information, the librarians encourage students to visit other facilities
as the need arises. |
